This topic came to mind after watching the Bernie Madoff docuseries on Netflix (I do recommend it). They mention ad nauseum his *unregistered* advisory business. I appreciate them emphasizing this fact to viewers. It is important for potential investors to thoroughly vet their financial professionals.
As they mention in the documentary, being registered puts you under the law’s microscope. It helps keep businesses honest and investors safe. It is for this reason criminals who attempt to defraud investors forego registration.
